IMPORTANT NOTE: the RHS suite of level 2 and 3 qualifications has changed.
For Level 2 there is a new Practical Certificate. Together with a new single theory Certificate, this makes up a new RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
The new Practical Certificate covers amenity procedures ( maintaining hard landscaping, using a hedgetrimmer and mower) as well as propagation, plant identification, pruning, planting etc. There will be two practical examinations at the centre with an RHS examiner and a centre assessor, and a 75 minute online test of underpinning knowledge. The new syllabus means that the new Level 2 Practical will require a commitment to at least 3 hours a week of self-study using course materials alongside the practical work undertaken in class.
The Practical can be awarded at Pass, Merit and Distinction.
For Level 3 the new Practical Certificate combines with a new single theory Certificate to make up an RHS Advanced Certificate; with a new Award in Horticultural Investigation this will make up a Level 3 Diploma.
The assessment format will include a practical assessment, a 'professional discussion' and an online examination.
