IMPORTANT NOTE: the RHS suite of level 2 and 3 qualifications changed in 2022.
For Level 2 there is a Practical Certificate which stands alone as a horticultural qualification, or it can be combined with the Level 2 theory Certificate, to make up an RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
This Practical Certificate covers amenity procedures ( maintaining hard landscaping, using a hedgetrimmer and mower) as well as propagation, plant identification, pruning, planting etc. There will be two practical examinations at the centre with an RHS examiner and a centre assessor, and a 75 minute online test of underpinning knowledge.
The expanded syllabus means that this Level 2 Practical qualification will require a commitment to at least 3 hours a week of self-study using the course materials provided, alongside the practical work undertaken in class.
The Practical can be awarded at Pass, Merit and Distinction.
For Level 3 the Practical Certificate is a stand-alone qualification, or it combines with the single Level 3 theory Certificate and a new Award in Horticultural Investigation (being released to centres for 2026-7); this will make up a Level 3 Diploma.
The assessment for the Level 3 Practical will include a single practical examination and a ‘professional discussion’, both conducted by an RHS Assessor, and an online examination.
