This course is essential for anyone who uses an abrasive wheel machine in a professional capacity as part of their work in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, greenkeeping, parks, gardens and also in amenity use. It will provide the individual with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare and operate an abrasive wheel machine safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation.
This qualification covers the use of abrasive wheel machines used for grinding or cutting and includes inspecting abrasive wheels and machines for damage, selection, fitting and adjustment of an abrasive wheel and the operation of abrasive wheel machine within a specific industrial environment. The qualification certificate will state either “bench mounted” or “portable handheld” plus either “electric”, “compressed air” or “engine driven” depending on the machine used..
This qualification will support progression into employment where safe operation of an abrasive wheel machine is part of the role. Safe operational skills are key to efficient use, good working practice and preventing accidents, leading to business benefits in terms of less machinery damage and down time.
Staff assessing these qualifications are approved City & Guilds NPTC Certificate of Competence Assessors. They do not have to be independent (not having taken part in the training of candidates), This effectively means that the same person can train and assess this qualification. Assessment may be carried out on the same day for small groups (1-3 persons) or on the day following training for larger course number (4-6 persons).
You will study the underpinning knowledge essential for correctly maintaining an abrasive wheel machine and receive tuition in how to maintain and safely operate an abrasive wheel machine.
There are two unites, these are:
Unit 201 Select, inspect and fit abrasive wheels
and
Unit 202 Operate abrasive wheel machines
Each unit is divided into learning outcomes which describe in further detail the skills and knowledge that a candidate should possess.
Each learning outcome has a set of assessment criteria (performance and knowledge and understanding) which will be used by the Assessor during the assessment process.
Unit 201 Select, inspect and fit abrasive wheels contains the following learning outcomes:
Unit 202 Operate abrasive wheel machines contains the following learning outcomes:
Candidates must successfully achieve all assessment items in both units.
The Certificate will be endorsed with the type of machine that was used in the assessment:
Either:
Please note: We only offer training in portable handheld machines either; portable handheld electric or portable hand held engine driven. This is because the majority of clients come to us for machines that are used in a hard landscaping context (e.g., Disc Cutters). Please discuss your requirements with us before booking a course.
Training is provided by a suitably qualified City & Guilds Assessor. This qualification can be assessed by the same person that delivered the training provided they are City & Guilds NPTC Assessor. It may also be assessed by an Independent Assessor, i.e.. somebody who was not involved in the training, provided they are also a City & Guilds NPTC Assessor.
Assessment may take place on the same day as training for small groups (1-3 people) or for larger groups (4- 6 people) on the following day (in most cases assessment will be carried out on the following day).
Assessment can take 1.5 - 3.0 hours and will always be at the venue at which you trained.
You will receive a City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence in the Safe Operation of Abrasive Wheel Machines (0125-01) and endorsed with the machine used for assessment.
Note: This is issued directly by City & Guilds NPTC.
Training is £160.00 per candidate, registration through CEPT is £27.00 and certification with City & Guilds NPTC is £35.00, assessment by a City & Guilds Independent Assessor is £72.00 total payable £294.00. Please note there is no V.A.T. payable as B.E.S.t. in Horticulture Education limited is a Not-for-Profit Organisation and is exempt.
