Safe Application of Pesticides (Pa1) Foundation Module

This course is essential for all those involved in the storage, handling and application of pesticides.  In the UK, anyone using a professional pesticide must either have a recognised specified certificate (previously known as a ‘Certificate of Competence’) or be working under the direct supervision, for the purposes of training, with someone who has such a certificate. 

The City & Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides  Pa1 (0216-49)  is the prerequisite for the suite of Pesticide Application Awards, e.g. Pa2/Pa6 etc. Candidates will not be permitted to undertake assessment of any application award until the Pa1 has been passed.

You will study the underpinning knowledge essential for safe pesticide application of pesticides in order to obtain a Pa1 certificate.

The following areas are covered during the course:

Learning outcomes

The learner will:

  • LO1 Know the legislative requirements and codes of practice relating to the use of pesticides (Criteria 1.1 – 1.2)
  • LO2 Understand the relevance of product information (Criteria 2.1)
  • LO3 Know how to minimise the risk of human contamination and implement emergency procedures (Criteria 3.1 – 3.4)
  • LO4 Know how to store and transport pesticides safely (Criteria 4.1 – 4.2)
  • LO5 Know how to manage and dispose of surplus pesticide and waste materials (Criteria 5.3 – 5.3)
  • LO6 Know the record keeping requirements (Criteria 6.1)
  • LO7 Know how to minimise the risk of environmental contamination and implement emergency procedures (Criteria 7.1 – 7.3)

This qualification is assessed by undertaking a multiple-choice test online, under the supervision of a City & Guilds Independent Assessor at a mutually convenient date. This will be arranged by our Test Centre as soon as possible (usually before training takes place).

You will receive a City & Guilds NPTC Certificate in The Safe Application of Pesticides at the same time you receive your Pa2, Pa6 certificate.

Note: This is issued directly by City & Guilds NPTC.

Training is £160.00 per candidate, registration through CEPT is £ 27.00 and certification with City & Guilds NPTC is £35.00, assessment is £60.00 done in the presence of a City & Guilds Assessor on a laptop, total payable £282.00 (No VAT as B.E.S.T. in Horticulture Education Limited is a not-for-profit Organisation).

We have a very high success rate in preparing candidates for assessment, to date we have achieved 99% success!

You can go on to train and be assessed on any of the application modules, i.e.,  Pa6, that will then entitle you to apply pesticides in a professional capacity as a fully trained and licensed pesticide spray operator.  It is then your responsibility to keep up to date with changes that may occur in the industry. Refresher training is recommended but is not obligatory.
