NEW Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pedestrian Controlled Mower

This course is essential for anyone who uses a pedestrian controlled mower in a professional capacity as part of their work in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, greenkeeping, parks, gardens and also in amenity use. It will provide the individual with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare and operate a mower safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation.

Individuals can choose the type of mower for assessment. The assessment covers pre-use checks, maintenance, identification of controls and instruments, and operating the machine taking into account the type of cutting mechanism used (e.g. rotary, cylinder, flail or reciprocating knife).

This qualification will support progression into employment where safe operation of mowers is part of the role. Safe operational skills are key to efficient use, good working practice and preventing accidents, leading to business benefits in terms of less machinery damage and down time.

Staff assessing these qualifications are approved Certificate of Competence City & Guilds NPTC Assessors. They do not have to be independent, but can be, or can have been involved with the training of the Candidate,  this effectively means that the same person can train and assess this qualification. Assessment may be carried out on the same day or the day following training depending on course numbers.

You will study the underpinning knowledge necessary, and receive one-to-one tuition to ensure that you can safely operate a mower to the prescribed standard in readiness for assessment for a City & Guilds Level Certificate in The Safe Operation of a Mower.

The following learning outcomes are are covered during the course (they are also broken down into assessment criteria). You will study the following:

Learning outcome 1

The learner will:
LO1 Know the requirements of risk assessment, legislation and safety when preparing a pedestrian mower (Criteria 1.1-1.5)

Assessment criteria

The learner can:
AC1.1 Carry out a site-specific hazard and risk assessment
AC1.2 Describe the relevant health and safety legislation in relation to mower operations
AC1.3 Select the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for mower operations
AC1.4 Identify the fuel requirements for the power unit and related safety precautions
AC1.5 Identify the safety features of the equipment being used

Learning outcome 2

The learner will:
LO2 Know how to carry out a risk assessment (Criteria 2.1-2.4)

Assessment criteria

The learner can:
AC2.1 Identify and explain the function of all controls
AC2.2 Carry out daily pre-use checks to the mower
AC2.3 Explain how to refuel the mower
AC2.4 Maintain the cutting mechanism

There are a number of ‘endorsements’ for this qualification which relate to the cutting mechanism on the machine, they are:

  • 957 Pedestrian controlled cylinder
  • 958 Pedestrian controlled rotary
  • 959 Pedestrian controlled flail
  • 960 Pedestrian controlled reciprocating knife

Note: Unless we are informed otherwise, we will assume that candidates require training for 958 a rotary mower and will be registered as such. If this is not the case, please notify us at the time of booking your course. Training for other types of ‘cutting mechanism’ can be arranged.

This qualification can be examined by the Trainer who delivers the training. Small groups (3 or less) can be trained and assessed in one day, larger groups (4 to 6) will be trained on day one and assessed on the following day, or on another mutually convenient date.

Assessment can take 1.5 – 3.00 hours (but well prepared candidates will take approximatley one hour). Assessment will always be at the venue at which training took place.

You will receive a City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pedestrian Controlled Mower. It will be endorsed relating to the cutting mechanism of the mower that the candidate was registered for and the one that was used during assessment. Note: This is issued directly by City & Guilds NPTC.

Assessment is carried out by a City & Guilds Assessor, who can be the person who trained you.

Training is £160.00 per candidate, registration through CEPT is £ 27.00 and certification with City & Guilds NPTC is £35.00, assessment by a City & Guilds Assessor is £72.00 total payable £294.00

Please note we supply trainees with all items of PPE for this course (with the exception of safety footwear, which must be supplied by the trainee/candidate).
