New City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Multi-tool Equipment (0014-37)

This course is essential for anyone who uses a multi-tool in a professional capacity as part of their work in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, greenkeeping, parks, gardens and also in amenity use. It will provide the individual with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare and operate a multi-tool safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation.

Candidates can choose from a variety of endorsements: 971 Battery powered brush cutter/trimmer, 972 Petrol powered brush cutter/trimmer, 973 Battery powered pole pruner, 974 Petrol powered pole pruner, 975 Battery powered hedge cutter, 976 Petrol powered hedge cutter, 977 Battery powered leaf blower, 978 Petrol powered leaf blower.

The assessment covers pre-use checks, maintenance, identification of controls and instruments, and operating the machine taking into account the type of machine and attachment used (e.g. Petrol powered brush cutter/trimmer).

This qualification will support progression into employment where safe operation of mowers is part of the role. Safe operational skills are key to efficient use, good working practice and preventing accidents, leading to business benefits in terms of less machinery damage and down time.

Staff assessing these qualifications are approved Certificate of Competence City & Guilds NPTC Assessors. They do not have to be independent (not having taken part in the training of candidates), This effectively means that the same person can train and assess this qualification. Assessment may be carried out on the same day for small groups (1-3 persons) or on the day following training for larger course number (4-6 persons).

You will study the underpinning knowledge essential for correctly maintaining and safely operating a multi tool and its attachments and receive tuition in how to maintain and safely operate a multi tool and its attachments.

Prepare a petrol power unit in multi-tool equipment, there is one learning outcome: 

The learner will:
LO1 Prepare a petrol power unit in multi-tool equipment (Criteria 1.1-1.13)

This is divided into a number of Assessment criteria, the learner can:

  • AC1.1 Identify hazards and risks associated with the working area and the proposed work
  • AC1.2 Outline the emergency planning procedures relevant to the working area
  • AC1.3 Outline health and safety legislation, and good industry practice
  • AC1.4 Use appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • AC1.5 Work in way which maintains health and safety is consistent with relevant legislation
    and industry good practice
  • AC1.6 Explain why safety features are fitted to a multi-tool
  • AC1.7 Check all safety feature checks
  • AC1.8 Explain the function and maintenance of the individual components
  • AC1.9 Describe inspection and maintenance of the multi-tool drive tube and coupling
  • AC1.10 Dispose of waste in line with legislation
    AC1.11 Describe how environmental damage can be minimised
  • AC1.12 Fuel the machine
  • AC1.13 Carry out work to minimise environmental damage

There are eight ‘endorsements’ for this qualification:

928 Battery powered brush cutter / trimmer

933 Petrol powered hedge cutter

934 Battery powered leaf blower

935 Petrol powered leaf blower

Note: It is important to also tell us which endorsement(s) is/are required. 

Unless we are informed otherwise, we will assume that candidates require training for a petrol multi tool  and they will be registered as such. If this is not the case, please notify us at the time of booking your course.

This qualification can be examined by the Trainer who delivered the training. Small groups can be trained and assessed in one day (up to 3 trainees), larger groups (up to 6 Trainees) are trained on day one and assessed on another mutually convenient date (usually the following day).

Assessment can take 1.5 – 3.00 hours and will always be at the venue at which you trained.

You will receive a City & Guilds NPTC Certificate of Competence in Multi Tool Equipment (0014-37) Note this is issued directly by City & Guilds NPTC.

Option 1 – Integrated Assessment (Assessment is carried out by the person who trained you)

Training is £160.00 per candidate, assessment is £ 72.00 registration through CEPT is £ 27.00 and certification with City & Guilds NPTC is £35.00 total payable £294.00

Please note we supply trainees with all items of PPE for this course (with the exception of safety footwear, which must be supplied by the trainee/candidate).
